Graduate Advisees

This page is specifically designed for my advisees who are pursuing a graduate program (meaning you have already earned a 4-year degree) in Organizational Leadership. Remember to consult two important documents to ensure your graduate-level success.

The Graduate Catalog outlines all of the graduate degree requirements and policies (https://catalog.wku.edu/graduate/).

The New Student Guide outlines the program requirements and gives detailed information on available resources.

What is a Degree Audit?

WKU students, advisors, and staff will use Degree Works to track your progress toward your graduate degree or certificate. Students are responsible for running their degree audit to follow their progress toward their degree. Before consulting with an advisor, run the degree audit to make sure you understand the requirements for the program you are pursuing. Directions for running the degree audit are available at: https://www.wku.edu/degreeworks/students.php.

When can I register for courses?

Registration dates are determined by the number of hours earned and the level of the degree being pursued. You can check your registration date using the following website: https://www.wku.edu/registrationguide/registration_dates.php.

How do I know what courses are being offered?

A couple of weeks before priority registration you will be able to see the courses that are being offered via the TopNet login screen. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LOG IN to see the courses. Visit WKU Topnet and click on “Schedule of Classes” on the left tool bar. Then, select the term for which you wan to view the classes.

When should I apply for graduation?

The application for graduation is required to cover the processing cost and mailing of your diploma or certificate. The fee includes a cap and gown should you choose to participate in the commencement ceremony. You should complete the application for graduation the semester before you plan to graduate. You should apply for graduation on TopNet.

Why can I not register?

First, make sure you are attempting to register during the correct timeframe. Refer to the “When I can register” question on this page. If it is within your registration window, check the following:

(1) Do you have a hold on your account? If so, contact the referenced office to rememdy that situation.

(2) Is the course restricted? Restricted courses have the letter “R” next to them. You must contact the instructor (or whoever is referenced on the blue note) before you can registrar for the course.

(3) Do you meet the prerequisite? Click on the course to review the prerequisite. If you do not meet the the prerequisites listed, you must contact the instructor teaching the course to request an override.

Can I request to take a course not listed on my degree audit?

You can. However, remember that the graduate program allows for students to also complete a certificate program as listed in the orientation manual. The Graduate School has specific requirements about duplicating courses. If you duplicated more than 12 hours between your graduate degree and certificate, you will not be able to graduate with one of the programs. Be sure to work with both advisors (your graduate program advisor and your graduate certificate advisor).
